Rhinophyma is a condition of chronic progressive sebaceous hyper-plasia, which can lead to cosmetic deformity. Rhinophyma is often thought of as end stage acne rosacea, but bacterial colonization with Demodex folliculorum is also hypothesised to be causative. Pre-disposing factors include fair skin & a family history of rosacea. In the past it was thought to be caused by excessive alcohol consumption which led to the unfortunate term ‘alcoholic nose’. It is now known that alcohol does not cause this disfiguring skin condition, but it can be an aggravating factor due to vasodilation and facial flushing
