The worldwide prevalence of obesity represents a significant public health crisis. In 1997, the World Health Organisation declared obesity an epidemic and shortly after named it “globesity” in response to the global increase in the incidence of obesity. In the 25 years since this declaration, and despite significant advances in our understanding of obesity pathophysiology, the incidence of obesity continues to rise, with 38% of the global population characterised as being overweight or obese Strikingly, current estimates indicate that this number will increase to 51% by 2035, costing the global economy the equivalent of $4 trillion
