Throughout the lifespan, acute unexplained events resulting in transient changes in colour, breathing or muscle tone can occur. Such events in children are common and rarely associated with serious disease. When encountered in the paediatric emergency department they often represent a diagnostic dilemma for the clinician, and heightened health anxiety for the caregiver due to their dramatic presentation but often undetermined cause.
